Family's tribute to keen cyclist

FAMILY and friends have paid tribute to a keen cyclist who was killed after a crash with a car.

Father-of-two David Allbutt was cycling along Liverpool Road West, in Church Lawton, shortly before 3pm on Thursday when he was involved in a collision with a Toyota Yaris.

Mr Allbutt, aged 62, who lived in Wistaston, near Crewe, suffered a fatal head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Yaris, a 64-year-old woman, was not seriously injured.

Police have launched an investigation to work out how the crash happened.

It is thought both car and cyclist were travelling in the direction of Alsager when the collision took place.

In a joint tribute, his wife Sheila, and two daughters, Martha, aged 25, and Amelia, aged 21, said: "David was a proud and devoted husband and father.

"He had been a keen cyclist for many years and had recently taken up motorcycling following his retirement. We are all devastated by this tragic accident."

Mr Allbutt, a retired estates manager for the NHS, was a long-standing member of the Crewe Clarion Wheelers Cycling Club.

It is thought he had been out cycling with friends during the day and was making his way back home when the accident happened.

Cyclist and friend Gerard Barker, who is the club's membership secretary and treasurer, cycled 14 miles to the scene of the crash from his home in Nantwich yesterday to try to understand what had happened.

Mr Barker, aged 50, said: "Everyone at the club is absolutely shocked and devastated by the news of Dave's death.

"Dave had been riding bikes for 50 years and had taken part in a lot of races during that time.

"He was a very experienced cyclist who was always sensible when he was out on the roads and didn't take any risks. He knew everything there was to know about bikes and cycling and he had been a key part of the cycling club for a good number of years.

"Dave was well known in the cycling community, both in Cheshire and in Stoke-on-Trent, and he will be sorely missed."

Before joining Crewe Clarion, Mr Allbutt had been a member of the Stone Wheelers Cycling Club for around 20 years.

Chairman Greg Dancer said: "Dave had only recently retired and was looking forward to being more relaxed about his cycling and not having to rush out after work.

"I've been racing with him for the last 30 years and he was a very keen cyclist in all aspects of the sport.

"It's an absolute tragedy."

Any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Cheshire Police on 0800 555 111, quoting incident 489 of May 19.
