Crowd flocks to ANC party

"I'll fast for seven or even 10 days if another party won Johannesburg," said a supporter, as the ANC prepared a bash

ANC supporters flocked to Luthuli House in central Johannesburg on Friday afternoon to celebrate the party's victory in local government elections.

Dressed in party regalia, the crowd sang and danced as a stage was set up on Sauer street.

Supporters from the Marcus Raphoto branch in Lenasia South believed the ANC would win Midvaal in the next municipal election in 2014. The Democratic Alliance won the municipality in Wednesday's poll.

“You must floor a champion to take the title, if you win by points you are doing nothing,” Smith Ramokopelo told Sapa.

“I'll fast for seven or even 10 days if another party won Johannesburg,” he said.

As the afternoon drew to a close, people huddled together in their ANC-emblazoned blankets to ward off the cold.

Fans of youth league president Julius Malema streamed in from the Johannesburg High Court, where closing arguments were taking place for his hate speech trial.

They sang the same song at the heart of Malema's trial -

“dubula ibhunu” (shoot the boer).

A strong police presence monitored the crowd.

President Jacob Zuma was expected to arrive later to thank them for supporting the ANC. -
