Charities and groups forced to offer reduced services

OTHER services have been reduced as a result of the cuts. Some of these include:

Base Camp, which helps Nottingham's South Asian community set up projects and groups, can now only help half the amount of people that it has in the past. Run by the Partnership Council it now only supports 12 community groups instead of 25 due to its Government funding being halved.

Citizen Advice Bureaux across the county still face reductions. Ashfield CAB is now only open from Monday to Wednesday instead of four days, can no longer do outreach work and has lost five out of 11 staff. However, it has received transition funding from the Government to extend a helpline service.

Meanwhile, opening hours at CABs in Eastwood and Beeston will be reduced but the details are not yet known.

The Jigsaw Support Service in Mansfield, which helps elderly, ill and disabled people stay in their own homes, is expected to be scaled back. Currently people can be given around four hours support a week for up to two years, which could be reduced to less than two hours a week for four months. This is due to anticipated cuts by Notts County Council.

Age UK Nottingham and Notts is now having to charge old people for its Handyperson service, which fixes things around the home and can prevent elderly people from falling or getting injured by trying to fix things themselves.

The previously free service now costs 14.99 per hour due to city council funding cuts, or 9.99 for people on low incomes. The charity is working with the council and the NHS to see if some services could be made free in the future.

The Nottingham Volunteer Centre is continuing despite funding cuts and 12 redundancies. It is now running a drop-in service instead of appointments and it no longer has a team to target 16 to 25 year olds.
