German rifles in Gaddafi compound

A large number of German assault rifles were discovered in the Tripoli residence of fugitive Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Berlin -

A large number of German assault rifles were discovered in the Tripoli residence of fugitive Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi when rebels stormed it last week although the German government had given no approval for such weapons to be sold to his regime, media reports said on Wednesday.

The rifles were G36s, the standard weapons for German troops, the Stuttgarter Nachrichten newspaper and ARD television network reported. They were G36 KV models, made with a shortened barrel for special forces, the reports said.

The exact number of the weapons found, how, when and from whom they were delivered remained unclear, but the reports said they were produced by Germany's small-arms maker Heckler & Koch GmbH.

“We deny that these weapons were supplied to Libya from Heckler & Koch,” the company told Stuttgarter Nachrichten.

The German Finance Ministry told the newspaper and ARD that no permission had been given for the export of the rifles to Libya. “The government has at this time no firm knowledge of a potential deployment of G36 weapons in Libya,” it was quoted as saying.

Juergen Graesslin, an activist who opposes the arms trade, charged, however, that “there is reasonable suspicion that Heckler & Koch or intermediaries illegally supplied large numbers of G36s to the Gaddafi regime.”

He told the newspaper he wants prosecutors to look into the matter.

“It all stinks to high heaven,” a member of parliament for the Greens, Hans-Christian Stroebele, told the newspaper. “Someone must have done something incompatible with German law.” - Sapa-dpa

Santa Cruz heads off to Real Betis

Real Betis have signed Manchester City's Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz on a one-year loan deal

|||

London - Real Betis have signed Manchester City's Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz on a one-year loan deal, the La Liga club said on their website (www.realbetisbalompie.es) on Monday.

The Seville club said Santa Cruz would be introduced to the media at the Estadio Benito Villamarin on Tuesday.

Santa Cruz was signed by City for around 17 million pounds ($27 million) from fellow Premier League club Blackburn Rovers in 2009 but injuries hampered his form and he returned to Rovers on loan last season.

The chances of the former Bayern Munich striker featuring in Roberto Mancini's side this season were negligible with Edin Dzeko, who scored four times against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, and new signing Sergio Aguero already keeping Carlos Tevez out of the starting line-up.

City have also loaned Emmanuel Adebayor, another of their unwanted big-money strikers, to Tottenham Hotspur. – Reuters

We are a sinking nation without honesty, hard work, says Ikon

AKHA-Speaker-IKON-31-8-2011Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly Mr. Samuel Ikon, spoke to Ayoyinka Olagoke, on a number of issues. The Speaker, who represents Etinan State Constituency, said until Nigeria inculcates the values that successful nations thrive on, we will be going round in circles. He also informed that the Assembly was also planning to domesticate the FoI Bill. Excerpts:

What are the immediate areas of concentration for the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly?

The fact that we have the opportunity to understudy what the immediate past House of Assembly did provides us room to plan better. Having been part of the previous Assembly, I have an advantage. For instance in the area of training, we would ensure that all the lawmakers attend more training workshops and conferences. We would also try to ensure there are more constituency interactions this time.  Part of the plans that we are looking towards by the end of 2013, would be to embark on a project tagged, ?Meet your Constituency Programme,? where the Speaker will visit the constituencies in company of the lawmaker representing the area. The purpose is to ascertain whether such lawmaker was in touch with his or her constituency. It will also be to ascertain what they have achieved and attracted to their constituencies in terms of constituency projects. Our belief is that every lawmaker should have, at least attracted some projects to his or her constituency, after two years in office. This period, we are going to concentrate on sponsoring more of private member bills instead of the Executive Bills that dominated the last House.

How will the Freedom of Information Bill affect the House?s relationship with the media?

We are looking at domesticating the Freedom of Information Bill. The Committee on Information will soon start work on that issue. We are aware that Ekiti State has domesticated the bill and that was the reason I said the Fifth Assembly will have a lot of collaborative efforts with the media. Plans are on the way to send people to Ekiti State to see what they did and we will see what we have here and what we can do in respect of our peculiar terrain and traditions. It is the desire of this House to domesticate the FoI Bill. We believe that the Bill is a good one and it gives both sides a sense of responsibility. It also demands maturity and high sense of patriotism. Already, we have started organising quarterly media briefing to allow us entertain questions from people concerning our activities. We are also going to encourage more interaction between the House and the media for transparency and accountability purposes.

What is your assessment of the last House of Assembly?

It performed very well in terms of what it was expected to do, which was to make good laws for the good governance of our state. We can see the massive transformation happening in Akwa Ibom today. These were all built on the foundation of the laws passed by the last House and properly implemented by the Executive. They did very well and history will be kind to them.

The Election Petitions Tribunal verdict, which struck out the petition of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) guber petition against Governor Godswill Akpabio, means different things to different people. Where do you stand?

As far as I am concerned, it was victory for truth, victory for justice and victory for the popular will of the people. Everybody in this state knows the truth that PDP won the election and it was very clear. I thank the judiciary for standing for the truth and remaining the last hope of the common man. That judgement rekindles our confidence in the judiciary. We congratulate all those that believe in the truth and justice. I believe the governor is transforming Akwa Ibom and I?m sure he will remain focused.

Nigeria is beset with a legion of challenges, ranging from dearth of infrastructure, to unemployment and insecurity. Are we making any progress as a nation?

Ordinarily issues like these are not supposed to be challenges to Nigeria anymore, if we are sincere with ourselves. What distances us from America and Europe is simply insincerity and not being passionate about finding lasting solutions to our problems. For instance, if you tell somebody bring in fire truck; he goes to bring refurbished ones forgetting that the equipment is meant to service the people for a long time. We seriously lack sense of patriotism and sincerity and these are the basis of our problems. Akwa Ibom is making a difference because the governor has never played politics with projects. He brought in companies that can deliver on expectations. For instance, he has cousins and friends that would have bought one or two bulldozers and set up road construction firms to bid for jobs in the state. But he didn?t allow that and today we have beautiful road networks because the jobs were given to those who can do it. Look at the e-library, the Governor?s lodge amongst other projects. Until Nigeria inculcates the necessary values that successful nations thrive on, that is honesty, hard work, patriotism, we will be wasting our time. I sit today as Speaker, I must leave legacies that will be remembered and that requires me to do the right thing. Nigerians must begin to have a sense of patriotism. When we have sense of patriotism we will not be selfish. What is happening in Nigeria has its root in selfishness.

Leadership tussle is commonplace in most state assemblies. How are you managing your challenges?

I don?t see any challenges ahead. With the calibre of members that we have in terms of exposure and education, there is no need to fear because it is a question of square pegs in square holes. I don?t anticipate any crisis and the way we run the House is such that there won?t be room for crisis because it is an open system, where we are free to express our feelings and we have a leadership that accepts criticisms and is open to discussions. We don?t gag our members. What you must understand about legislature is that we are all equals. Because there must be some order, that is why they say this one is Speaker, this one is Deputy Speaker but first and foremost, we are all equals because we stood the same election, hold the same offices as representatives of our various constituencies. This one is an internal arrangement of order and command. We don?t intend to breathe down on people as if they are our staff.

Shotton grabs win for Stoke

Stoke's Ryan Shotton scored in the closing moments as the FA Cup finalists snatched a dramatic victory against West Brom.

|||

Birmingham – Stoke's Ryan Shotton scored in the closing moments as the FA Cup finalists snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory against West Brom at the Hawthorns on Sunday.

Shotton netted in the 89th minute to condemn Albion to their third successive Premier League defeat and give Tony Pulis's undefeated side their first league win of the season.

To make matters worse for West Brom boss Roy Hodgson, Stoke's goal was the result of a mix-up between goalkeeper Ben Foster and centre-back Gabriel Tamas.

Until then it looked as if Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic's superb save from Shane Long would be the most notable action of a dour encounter.

West Brom made a strong start and Somen Tchoyi's cross was met by Chris Brunt, only for the Albion captain to direct his header wide.

Paul Scharner then escaped the marking of Jonathan Woodgate to connect with a Brunt free-kick but his powerful header was directed straight at Begovic.

It took a superb save from Begovic to prevent West Brom taking the lead after 12 minutes.

Tchoyi delivered a testing cross from the left flank and Long's bullet header from six yards drew a fine stop from Begovic.

Albion remained on top and Brunt's free-kick completely wrong-footed Begovic but flew inches wide.

Stoke didn't create their first worthwhile opening until early in the second half when Glenn Whelan took a pass from Jon Walters in his stride and shot just wide.

Pulis sent on Shotton for Jermaine Pennant with 15 minutes remaining, but it was Albion who kept pressing with Tchoyi volleying just wide after Scharner had nodded a cross from Steven Reid into his path.

West Brom forced three successive corners in a late spell of pressure but could not find a way through and Shotton took advantage to prod home in the final moments after Foster and Tamas made a hash of an attempted clearance. – Sapa-AFP

Swansea still goalless

Swansea are still waiting for their first Premier League goal after being held to a gaolless draw by Sunderland.

|||

Swansea are still waiting for their first Premier League goal after being held to a 0-0 draw by Sunderland at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers' side have now played three league games since their promotion from the Championship last season and have failed to scored against Manchester City, Wigan and now Sunderland.

Record signing Danny Graham headed their best chance wide when unmarked inside the box, while the former Watford striker forced two fine saves from Simon Mignolet and Scott Sinclair stuck the bar.

The Black Cats, also still without a league win this season, threatened through Asamoah Gyan early on but the Ghana forward fluffed their best chance when he miscontrolled a Jack Colback pass, while debutant John O'Shea hit the bar.

Rodgers had named the same starting eleven that lined up against Wigan last weekend as the Welsh club looked to make amends for the shock midweek defeat against minnows Shrewsbury in the League Cup.

O'Shea almost opened his Sunderland account inside two minutes as he headed against the bar from a Sebastian Larsson corner, while Gyan fired wide after neat play by the Sweden international.

Sunderland's positive start continued as Swans goalkeeper Michel Vorm was forced to make a smart stop to deny Gyan in the 13th minute after Stephane Sessegnon had played the Ghana striker in.

But Sinclair came so close to giving Swansea a 24th-minute lead as his 25-yard strike came back off the bar with Mignolet beaten, before Nathan Dyer headed narrowly wide.

The game had been simmering thanks to a series of niggly fouls and the first genuine flashpoint arrived as Cattermole went down holding his face after a tussle with Kemy Agustien, but referee Mark Halsey took no action against the Swansea player despite replays suggesting an elbow had caught the Black Cats midfielder.

Graham then missed the best chance of the half as he headed wide from inside 12 yards with the goal at his mercy.

Mignolet did just enough to deny Ashley Williams a free header as the pressure increased, while Graham curled wide from a Wayne Routledge through ball. – Sapa-AFP

Mata scores on debut for Chelsea

Juan Mata scored on his debut for a still-stuttering Chelsea in a home win over promoted Norwich City.

|||

London – Juan Mata scored on his debut for a still-stuttering Chelsea in a 3-1 home win over promoted Norwich City as the Londoners joined Wolverhampton Wanderers at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Andre-Villas Boas's new side have failed to sparkle in the early weeks of the Premier League season but Portuguese full back Jose Bosingwa gave Chelsea a superb early start with a rare goal from 22 metres.

Norwich equalised in comical fashion when stand-in goalkeeper Hilario bungled a cross and Grant Holt hooked into an empty net midway through the second half but the hosts went ahead again through Frank Lampard's 82nd-minute spotkick.

The penalty was awarded when Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy was dismissed for bringing down Ramires and Spanish substitute Mata exposed Norwich's 10 men when he bent in a third goal in injury time.

Chelsea's Didier Drogba, brought in to partner Fernando Torres up front, suffered a sickening fall and had to have extensive treatment as he was carried off.

Wolves had won their opening two fixtures, like Manchester City and Manchester United, but were content to leave Aston Villa with a 0-0 draw after the Birmingham-based side put their local rivals under the cosh for long spells.

Gabriel Agbonlahor had arguably the best chance for the hosts but goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey pulled off a good save.

Liverpool can join Chelsea and Wolves on seven points if they win at home to Bolton Wanderers later on Saturday (6.30pm).

Manchester City travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (2.30pm) when champions Manchester United welcome Arsenal (5pm).

Argentine Franco Di Santo scored twice to give Wigan Athletic a 2-0 home win over promoted Queen's Park Rangers with the visitors deciding not to give Joey Barton a debut after his move from Newcastle United.

Villa and Wigan are joint fifth.

Hapless Blackburn Rovers lost 1-0 at home to Everton after Junior Hoilett and Mauro Formica both missed penalties for the home side before Mikel Arteta made no mistake with his injury-time spotkick.

Promoted Swansea City, still looking for their first Premier League goal, drew 0-0 at home to Sunderland in a game where both sides hit the bar. – Reuters
