Day I Was Caught Up Into Heaven, By Ayorinde

Samson-AyorindeFounder and General Overseer of World Evangelism Bible Church, Ojota, Lagos, Prophet Samson Ayorinde, speaks to NWAUBA CHIGOZIE on his calling, challenges of the ministry, global outreach and some national issues.

Calling

I REMEMBER vividly how God called me in an audible voice. That was when I was at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, studying to become an architect. I remember clearly that it was around February 15, 1986. I was writing my thesis in my room, Block F2, Room 15, Suleiman Hall.

At around 4:15pm, I heard an audible voice that called me to go and preach. Apparently, I?ve been a Nazarite from the womb of my mother, which is why I am called Samson. A prophet spoke of my birth, saying that I was going to be acknowledged all over the world.

Of course, as a young man, I didn?t take to it. I became an atheist; a follower of Darwin?s theory, until the day when I heard the Lord?s voice calling. That was the turning point. I sought the Lord, gave my life to Christ and started preaching the gospel.

The work has not been easy. Immediately the Lord called me, he led me through a series of fasting that culminated into a 40-day fast. I took only water just like my Master. I finished and was caught up into heaven and the Lord gave the name of the ministry as ?World Evangelism?. It was when I came to the earth that I added ?Bible Church? because I believed in Bible and I believe in church. The crusade angle matches with the World Evangelism ministries.

After that, the Lord crowned His work on me with a very powerful and versatile prophetess in the person of my wife, Mercy Bamidele Ayorinde, who is a strong prayer warrior, and a woman of fasting. Fine texture in character, she has been a very great support in the accomplishment of the big task.

We started very simply in our house in Zaria when she was working with the Ahmadu Bello University as a researcher. Later, the Lord told me to move to Lagos and I started here in Obudu from zero. The rest is history.

When we began having good results, they stopped us from showing miracles on the TV. I took the message to Europe and Europe took me away from Nigeria. You know, as the saying goes, ?prophets are not acceptable in their own country?. God so kind, after three to four years, I had my own television station? Faith Television, based in London where I have live transmissions 24 hours daily. Right now, we?re covering about 40 nations and we hope that our upcoming crusade is going to reach over 100 nations. God used the television station to amplify the work. We have now spread to Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, France, UK, Ireland, as well as America. In Africa we have reached South Africa, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Lagos and Zambia, as well as Jerusalem. Despite that, I can never forget Ogudu, Ojota. Lagos is the source, Obudu precisely.

Meeting with wife

I was praying and the Lord spoke to me, one day, while I was in the kitchen, that she is my wife. In her former church, she was a powerful prayer warrior, evangelist, soul winner and deaconess. I didn?t spiritualise it. I just called her and said, ?the Lord told me that you are my wife?.

Of course, she said no. You know women, when they say no, they mean yes. She first of all said no, that she wants to go and pray about it. I gave her time and she went to pray. The confirmation of that prayer is the person beside me today.

Challenges of coordinating the ministry from overseas

It has not been easy; it is like a half in the air, a half on the land. I am praying that God will give me a private jet. The fact is that one person cannot save the world, so I use the priority law? major on major, minor on minor. I take the major issues, do it, and for the minor, delegate other people to assist. One man can?t save the world.

Keeping a large and well-conducted church, as ours, has its own challenges. You gather two heads; you gather two problems. You gather two thousand people; you gather two thousand problems. Church is about ministering grace and favour to the people of God in solving challenges, managing crisis, managing people, infrastructure, finances and moving towards the kingdom of God while helping them to live a good and exemplary life.

Economic hardship

As you can see, currently, the global recession is being broadcast as one of the worst recessions in history, and the effects is more on the developed nations. But it is my prayer and I prophesy that it will not get to Nigeria in Jesus name. Amen. This is an emerging economy and with the presence of prophets and prophetesses in Nigeria, the people of God are praying and fasting. We will laugh with time. Even though, the world suffers because of this recession, Nigeria will be reigning and coming up because it is an emerging economy. And by the grace of God, through the leadership of President Jonathan and the most viable governor in Nigeria, Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, Nigeria and Lagos State are going to have good results, come 2012. We shall have a good smile in Jesus name. Amen.

Theological background

Oh no. The only seminary I went through is the one in the Bible. I never had the opportunity. It would have been a very huge privilege to go to a seminary but I didn?t have the opportunity. I would have loved to.

Boko Haram

The Boko Haram problem is not a religious crisis. The problem is a political crisis, as we all know. Every bomb is an answer to thousands of unsaid issues. My friend?s church was burnt in Kaduna. I can tell you it is a political crisis. And it would only have a political solution? dialogue and not confrontation. You can never use war to settle war.

Removal of government?s subsidy on pilgrimage

In every nation, the issue of pilgrimage is an issue that is controversial. There is always something that is controversial about it. It depends on the strength of the economy of the country. There is no way that they will remove the subsidy 100 per cent. The issue of pilgrimage is a very sensitive one because Nigeria is a religious country and we want to suggest that government forms a forum to really look at the policy from time to time and update it.

But we should know, as a country, that the whole world is in a recession and a lot of countries now are reorganising. There are lots of tax cuts. There are lots of things people are doing to conserve money. We should be positive about change. Change is the only constant thing.

?Fuel subsidy

You know our government? they put tension on minors. The issue is not removing the fuel subsidy. The issue is that there is no constant power supply. If there is constant power supply then we won?t need generators.

Students lament food prices in Sudan

Hundreds of students have staged an anti-government rally in Sudan to protest against poverty and rising food prices.

|||

Khartoum - Hundreds of students staged an anti-government rally in eastern Sudan on Sunday, protesting against poverty and rising food prices, witnesses said.

Protests are rare in the African country but anger has been building up over a severe economic crisis with spiralling food prices. Several small anti-government protests took place in the capital Khartoum in the past few weeks.

Hundreds of students took to the streets in the eastern city of Kassala late on Sunday, several witnesses told Reuters.

“They were chanting 'people are hungry' and 'people want the overthrow of the government,” one witness said, declining to be identified.

There was no immediate comment from the government.

Kassala lies in an underdeveloped region near the border of Eritrea where anger has been simmering for a long time.

Opposition activists said a protest was held in Kassala two weeks ago when students initially demanded better study conditions. Since then anger has been building up over high inflation and a lack of economic development.

Last week, Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir visited Kassala to unveil government projects in the region.

Sudan has been struggling with an economic crisis since its former civil war foe South Sudan took away much of the oil production when it became independent in July.

The lack of oil revenues - the dominant source of state income - has driven up inflation as Sudan imports much of its food needs. The government is trying to diversify the economy but analysts say little has been achieved due to a US trade embargo, corruption and lack of planning. - Reuters

Sundowns thrash Leopards

Sundowns have stayed in touch with log leaders after a resounding victory over Black Leopards.

|||

Braces from Nyasha Mushekwi and Katlego Mphela set up a resounding 5-1 win for Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria on Saturday.

With this confident performance the hosts stayed in touch with the Premiership log leaders, settling into fourth place in the standings.

Leopards, meanwhile, stretched their winless streak to six league matches as they remained entrenched in the relegation zone.

Mushekwi got the ball rolling for Downs, connecting with a cross from Elias Pelembe in the 10th minute, but he sent his header wide.

The visitors did little to trouble the Sundowns defence, but Rodney Ramagalela had a good chance in the dying stages of the first half which was kept out by goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands.

The home side, after dominating for most of the opening period, were eventually rewarded on the stroke of half-time when a clever chip from Mushekwi gave them a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Downs again threatened shortly after the restart when Tsholofelo Modise drew a superb save from Azwindini Maphaha, who had replaced Posnett Osmony minutes earlier in the Leopards goal.

Ramagalela had another opportunity to level the scores but again his effort was wayward as his header sailed wide.

Mushekwi struck with his second goal with half an hour left, kick-starting an onslaught from the hosts after he latched onto a Modise corner to extend the lead.

Having got his team in a dominant position, Mushekwi was replaced a minute later by Mphela, and the tactical move paid off almost immediately as Mphela fired in an effort shortly after running onto the park.

Khethokwakhe Masuku scored a consolation goal for Leopards with five minutes left, but Richard Heynekane hit back for Downs two minutes later, and Mphela netted his second with a header in injury time to make sure. – Sapa

Gunners shock Blues, City stay top

Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea, while Manchester United recorded a win over Everton and City maintained their lead.

|||

London – Skipper Robin van Persie scored a hat-trick as Arsenal beat Chelsea 5-3 in a remarkable Premier League match at Stamford Bridge while Manchester City stayed top of the table with a 3-1 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

City remained five points clear of Manchester United and moved nine clear of third-placed Chelsea and fourth-placed Newcastle United with second-half goals from Edin Dzeko, Aleksandar Kolarov and Adam Johnson.

Wolves' goal came from a Stephen Hunt penalty after City skipper Vincent Kompany was sent off but it could not stop them slumping to a second defeat by City in four days after losing 5-2 at home in a League Cup match on Wednesday.

Manchester United bounced back from their 6-1 mauling by City last weekend with a 1-0 victory at Everton where Javier Hernandez scored the first-half winner.

Those results left City top with 28 points from 10 games, followed by United (23), Chelsea (19) and Newcastle United (19), at least until they meet Stoke City on Monday.

Bottom side Wigan Athletic suffered a seventh successive league defeat, a 2-0 loss at home to Fulham, while fellow strugglers Blackburn Rovers drew 3-3 at Norwich City who came back from 3-1 down and equalised with a Grant Holt penalty with the last kick of the game at Carrow Road.

With West Bromwich Albion playing Liverpool in a 1630 GMT kickoff, the first seven games of the day produced 29 goals with eight of them coming in an astonishing match at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal won with a hat-trick from Van Persie, including two in the last seven minutes, and one each from Andre Santos and Theo Walcott.

Chelsea led twice with goals from Frank Lampard and John Terry but although they then came back to equalise with an 80th-minute goal from Juan Mata, they went on to concede five at home for the first time in a league match since Liverpool beat them 5-2 in 1989.

The stunning victory was Arsene Wenger's 500th since he became Arsenal manager in 1996, Arsenal's first away win in the league this season and Chelsea's first home defeat as the English top-flight continues to dish out goals galore.

Chelsea went ahead through Lampard after 14 minutes before Van Persie equalised in the 36th minute and Chelsea skipper Terry took advantage of some woeful Arsenal defending to put his side 2-1 up in the last minute of the first half.

Santos struck Arsenal's second equaliser after 49 minutes before Walcott scored a brilliant solo goal, picking himself up and continuing his run after slipping over, to give Arsenal a 3-2 lead after 55 minutes.

Mata then equalised for Chelsea with a brilliant swerving shot, which Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had no chance of saving, to make it 3-3 after 80 minutes.

Chelsea were then guilty of some poor defending five minutes later with Florent Malouda hitting a stray pass back to Terry, who stumbled to leave Van Persie to run in on Chelsea keeper Petr Cech before rounding him and blasting the ball in.

The Dutchman then made it 28 goals from his last 27 Premier League games in this calendar year to make it 5-3 in the second minute of stoppage time with a swerving shot to match Mata's.

Arsenal, who made a poor start to the season, climbed up to sixth place until the later matches at least and celebrated as if they had won a cup final.

“We needed to win with style and class and we did that against a big team and it was a big win for us,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

The result consigned Chelsea to a second successive defeat in a London derby after losing at QPR last weekend and was the first time they had conceded five against Arsenal since 1979.

Chelsea's stunned manager Andre Villas-Boas said: “It was so open it could have gone either way. We will have to reflect on the mistakes we made – there are some things we must improve.”

At Goodison Park, Hernandez scored what proved to be the winner and gave United their first victory at Everton since September 2007 when he capitalised on good approach work from Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck before Patrice Evra crossed from the left for the unmarked Mexican to turn in on 19 minutes.

“It's an important result to come away from home and win,” United manager Alex Ferguson told the BBC.

“Everton is never an easy game and they put everything they could into the game. First half we played some fantastic football and scored a good goal. Hernandez is fantastic in the box. It's a good result and we worked hard for it.”

It was not all good news for United, though, as Chris Smalling sustained a fractured foot and Ferguson said the defender could be out for a month.

Bale double seals glory for Spurs

Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart let their boots do the talking in a fiery derby against Queens Park Rangers.

|||

London - Two goals from Gareth Bale and one from Rafael van der Vaart gave Tottenham Hotspur a 3-1 win over Queens Park Rangers in a cracking London Premier League derby at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Spurs extended their unbeaten League run to seven matches with a superb first-half performance and a gritty rearguard action as QPR made a game of it after being outclassed in the opening 45 minutes.

Spurs led at the break through an angled drive from Bale after 20 minutes and an opportunistic effort from Van der Vaart, who scored for the fifth successive league match to equal a club record shared by Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Keane in the Premier League era.

QPR hit back when substitute Jay Bothroyd headed in his first goal for the club to make it 2-1 after 62 minutes and maintained the upper hand for a spell, before visibly wilting after Bale added his second goal

The Wales international produced a stunning strike from the edge of the box after 72 minutes following a brilliant exchange of passes with Aaron Lennon.

“I thought Spurs were fabulous and at halftime it would have been easy just to think how many they were going to get, so I decided to make changes and we came back strongly after showing them too much respect,” QPR manager Neil Warnock told reporters.

“I even found myself clapping their third goal, it was just a such a fabulous goal,” he added.

“They are a top team, full of class but we can take a lot of credit from that performance today, we have come a long way since Fulham (a 6-0 defeat a month ago), and we made them work very hard for it in the second half.”

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said his side should have been 4-0 or 5-0 ahead at halftime.

“But then when you find yourselves only 2-1 up, it's difficult,” he said. “But we finished it off with Gareth's goal to keep this great run going, I am delighted.”

Warnock also praised his defender Anton Ferdinand, who has admitted enduring a stressful week after being the unwitting victim of an alleged racist slur from England captain John Terry during last weekend's match against Chelsea at Loftus Road.

The alleged insult was shown on YouTube and has prompted an investigation by the FA with the Metropolitan Police also showing an interest. Terry has denied the allegations.

“Anton showed great character today and did not put a foot wrong,” said Warnock whose promoted team lie 12th in the standings. “I thought he was the man of the match. He is defending superbly and did very well today.”

The win lifted Spurs up to fifth spot on 19 points from nine matches, level with third-placed Chelsea, who lost 5-3 at home to Arsenal on Saturday, and Newcastle United.

Manchester City, who beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 on Saturday, lead the way with 28 points, five clear of Manchester United, 1-0 winners at Everton.

Newcastle will move above Chelsea if they maintain their unbeaten League record at Stoke City on Monday. - Reuters

City maintain five-point lead

Manchester City kept their five-point atop the Premier League with a clinical performance against Wolves.

|||

Manchester, United Kingdom – Manchester City punished an error-strewn performance from Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey to clinch a 3-1 victory on Saturday to maintain their five-point lead at the top of the table.

Edin Dzeko, Aleksandar Kolarov and Adam Johnson scored the goals for City, who were reduced to 10 men when captain Vincent Kompany was sent off for a foul which led to a penalty duly converted by Stephen Hunt.

Hunt's 75th-minute spot-kick reduced City's lead to 2-1 and ensured a more anxious finale than should have been the case for the league leaders.

City took the lead after 51 minutes when Hennessey saw a routine clearance charged down by Sergio Aguero. The ball broke kindly for Dzeko who had the simple task of steering the ball into an open net from the edge of the area.

Hennessey was also at fault after 66 minutes when Aguero found David Silva whose 18-yard strike was fumbled by the Wolves keeper, allowing Kolarov to react first and net the rebound from close range.

Finally, in the first minute of stoppage time, City's nerves were eased after substitute Mario Balotelli broke down the right and squared the ball to Yaya Toure who, in turn, fed Johnson.

The England winger took his time before delivering a superb finish into the bottom left-hand corner.

City had seemed in the mood to continue where they left off in the 5-2 midweek League Cup romp at Wolves with Kolarov's first minute corner causing problems for the visitors and falling for Samir Nasri, on the edge of the area, whose terrific strike was tipped over, acrobatically, by Hennessey.

Perhaps the start was too comfortable for City, or at least for full-back Micah Richards, because he was badly at fault in the seventh minute when he miscontrolled a simple through ball and delivered it to Hunt whose pass allowed Kevin Doyle to send a low shot skidding just wide of the City goal.

Soon however, Silva and Aguero were linking neatly with the latter's shot passing high and wide of the goal before Dzeko sent Richards down the right with the forward almost netting the resulting cross via a deflection from Roger Johnson.

Silva's short pass found unmarked Aguero 20 yards out at the midpoint of the first half and his thunderous shot was turned round his post by another smart piece of goalkeeping from Hennessey.

Nasri showed persistence after 35 minutes when he dispossessed Adlene Guedioura and twisted into the Wolves area where his cross looked like being met by Dzeko until the forward appeared to be held down by Richard Stearman.

Finally Silva's pass sent Dzeko sprinting ahead of the Wolves back-line with the City forward showing a neat turn of pace before shooting from the edge of the box and forcing Hennessey into the latest of a number of impressive saves.

Silva missed a near-post chance from Aguero's cross soon after the restart although going a goal behind seemed to inspire their opponents.

Hunt beat the City defence just after the hour before delivering a centre which might have brought an equaliser.

But, with Aguero and Silva benefiting from increasing space at the back, City were a constant threat.

Even before Wolves' consolation, they might have killed off the game when popular substitute Balotelli collected Aguero's back-heel and curled a shot wide in the 71st minute. – Sapa-AFP

Another witness, Babagana Dan Damasak, said, ?No one can tell whether there are casualties or not. Immediately after the blast, we all fled for safety. As I am talking to you now, many JTF vehicles have arrived the scene with soldiers. They have also cordoned off the area and have launched a house-to-house search?.

As at press time, our correspondent could not get the reaction of Colonel Victor Ebhaleme, the head of field operations of the JTF, as his phone was switched off.

ICC prosecutor seeks Gaddafi son's surrender

Informal contact has been made with fugitive Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, in order to arrest him and bring him to trial.

|||

The Hague - The prosecutor for the world's top war crimes court said on Friday informal contact has been made with Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the fugitive son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, in order to arrest him and bring him to trial.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) charged Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam and Libya's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi with crimes against humanity for the bombing and shooting of civilian protesters in February.

Abdel Majid Mlegta, a senior military official of Libya's National Transitional Council, told Reuters on Wednesday that Saif al-Islam and Senussi wanted to surrender to the ICC in The Hague because they felt unsafe in Libya, Algeria or Niger.

A NTC source said on Thursday Saif al-Islam wanted an aircraft, possibly arranged by a neighbouring country, to take him out of Libya's southern desert and into ICC custody.

Under such a deal, Saif al-Islam would be taken to The Hague where the ICC shares a detention unit with the U.N. Yugoslavia war crimes tribunal and the Special Court for Sierra Leone, where former Liberian president Charles Taylor is on trial.

ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah on Friday declined to say where Saif al-Islam is hiding.

“If we reach agreement, logistical measures for his transfer will be taken,” Abdallah said, adding that this might take some time. “It is not possible to discuss logistics or make presumptions about what is needed at this stage. There are different scenarios depending on what country he is in.”

The ICC has no police force of its own, and therefore has to rely on state cooperation to have suspects arrested.

Some suspects remain at large, such as Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, whose government has snubbed the court.

The Dutch authorities typically assist the Hague-based courts in transferring suspects to the detention centre.

For example, former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladic was flown to Rotterdam on a Serbian government plane and then transferred by the Dutch authorities by helicopter or car to the detention centre in The Hague.

“The ICC itself is responsible for transfers to the Netherlands. Upon arrival of a suspect in the Netherlands, we give logistical support,” a Dutch foreign ministry spokesman said.

If Saif al-Islam were to slip into Niger, an ICC member state, the Niger government has an obligation to arrest him. Tunisia and Mali are also member states, whereas Algeria is not.

“The question is to what extent these countries are ready to manage the pressure that will be put on them by an ICC transfer as it will have implications for them with other African countries,” said Damien Helly at the European Union Institute for Security Studies.

The African Union has criticised the ICC's focus on Africa and has opposed the arrest warrant for Sudan's Bashir, who has travelled to ICC member states Malawi, Chad, Kenya and Djibouti in the past without being arrested.

Helly questioned whether Saif al-Islam was “desperately trying to save his life” or whether his offer to surrender was a way of buying time or bargaining to improve his situation.

DEFENCE

The detention centre, in a leafy residential neighbourhood of The Hague, is next to an old prison where Dutch resistance fighters were imprisoned by the Nazis.

Inmates stay in single-occupant cells about 10 square metres, where they can watch TV, read or work on their cases.

Each cell in the ICC wing contains a bed, desk, bookshelves, a cupboard, toilet, hand basin and a telephone, although calls are placed by the centre's staff.

Detainees can use computers to work on their cases, but cannot access email or the internet. They can also play sports and pursue other hobbies.

On arrival, Saif al-Islam would first appear in court to be formally charged and informed of his rights.

ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo accused Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam and al-Senussi of drawing up a “predetermined plan” to kill protesters and said that Gaddafi gave the orders, while Saif al-Islam organised the recruitment of mercenaries.

Peter Robinson, a legal adviser to former Bosnian Serb president Radovan Karadzic who is on trial at the Yugoslavia tribunal, said Saif al-Islam should not try to defend himself by arguing that he was just obeying his father's orders.

“A person is required under international law not to obey an illegal order,” Robinson said, adding that a more useful defence would be to argue that crimes were committed on orders from lower-level commanders.

Geert-Jan Knoops, a Dutch-based international criminal law attorney, said Saif al-Islam could challenge the ICC case on two main fronts - that there was an “abuse of process” or that evidence of a “political plan” to kill protesters was lacking.

He said Saif al-Islam could argue that the ICC prosecution was politically influenced and forced by the United Nations to seek regime change instead of protecting human rights in Libya.

“It can be argued that the ICC prosecution and procedures are abused; in other words: abuse of process,” Knoops said. - Reuters

World markets build gains

World markets are ending the week on solid ground buoyed by the deal clinched by European leaders to contain the eurozone debt crisis.

|||

World markets are ending the week on solid ground Friday buoyed by the deal clinched by European leaders early Thursday morning to contain the eurozone debt crisis.

The benchmark Stoxx Europe 600 index rose by 0.59 per cent to 250.89 points in morning trading amid expectations Thursday's agreement signals that Europe might now be able to muddle through the two-year-old crisis gripping the 17-member currency bloc.

The increase brought the rise for the week in the index to 5 per cent as bank stocks continued to rally.

Investors had breathed a sigh of relief Thursday with shares racketing up after the Europeans pieced together an agreement to tackle the crisis.

The euro was hovering around 1.42 dollars Friday - its highest level in about two months - after gaining about 2 per cent on Thursday.

Investors across Asia also reacted positively to the news out of Europe with Japan's Nikkei index finishing the week up 1.39 per cent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index closing up 1.68 per cent.

Underscoring the sense of optimism that has emerged among investors this week, shares in Hong Kong ended the week up 7 per cent and by 5.8 per cent in Shanghai.

This came after the relief rally spread across the Atlantic to Wall Street. New York's Dow Jones Industrial Average closed on Thursday up 2.86 per cent at 12,208.55 points.

As the trading day unfolded in Europe on Friday, the region's premier stock market in London was up 0.44 per cent.

Investors in Germany and France - the eurozone's two biggest economies -were more upbeat. While shares in Frankfurt jumped by more than 1 per cent, stocks in Paris gained 0.81 per cent helped along by a solid third-quarter report from French carmaker Renault.

Friday's gains followed rises on both the French and German bourses of about 6 per cent on Thursday.

Analysts said the more cautious mood prevailing on European markets on Friday also reflected concerns among investors that European officials still had to hammer out the key details surrounding Thursday's deal.

This includes the possible future role of the world's leading emerging economies, such as China and Brazil in backing the Europeans' efforts to deal with the crisis.

This could involve helping to finance cash-strapped eurozone states such as Italy and Spain. China has 3.2 trillion dollars in foreign reserves.

As evidence of the concerns about the deal, Milan's stock market bucked the uptrend in shares around the world by slumping about 0.5 per cent in morning trading Friday.

Rome faces a major battle to clean up its high debt levels, which also forms a major part of Europe's drive to stop the crisis from spreading to nations like Italy, which is the eurozone's third biggest economy.

In the meantime, it was the banking sector that once again helped to drive European stock markets on Friday.

The Stoxx 600 Europe banking index was trading up 1.72 per cent, having gained more than 11 per cent on the week. Moves to underpin the eurozone banking sector was a key part of the deal reached at the Brussels summit.

But underlying the scale of the fallout from the crisis for markets, the banking index is down about 23 per cent on the year. - Sapa-dpa

Nwabueze, Dafinone, Adedeji: Remove subsidy, invite unrest

The Federal Government?s plan to remove the subsidy on petroleum products should be shelved because it would further impoverish the masses and could lead to social unrest in the country, leaders of The Project Nigeria Movement said in Lagos yesterday.

Constitutional lawyer Professor Ben Nwabueze, Second Republic Senator David Dafinone and former Secretary General of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Professor Adebayo Adedeji all spoke at the end of the Project?s quarterly meeting. The Project Nigeria Movement is an emerging political movement.

Prof. Nwabueze, who spoke on behalf of the group, said successive governments had promised to provide infrastructure when subsidy was removed but that the results had always been creation of hardship and suffering for the people. He said the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo had based its frequent increases in pump price of petrol on subsidy removal with nothing to show for it. He also said Nigeria is bedevilled with different problems which could only be solved through a democratized constitution and not by the 1999 constitution produced during the military era.

{pullquote}Subsidy is same song since 1999. Nothing was achieved with previous subsidy removal. The more they remove subsidy, the more corrupt our officials become.{/pullquote}

Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress Comrade Joe Ajaero wondered why the federal government, which said it earmarked N240 billion for fuel subsidy, later turned around to say it spent over N900 billion on subsidies. ?The National Assembly should explain to Nigerians how the N900 billion expenditure was incurred,? he said.

Another leader of the movement, Dr. Kunle Olajide, said ?Subsidy is same song since 1999. Nothing was achieved with previous subsidy removal. The more they remove subsidy, the more corrupt our officials become. Government officials should appreciate the fact that Nigerians are suffering. The moment you are in government, you become shielded from hardship of the common man.? He urged the government to have a rethink on the issue because according to him, it will further impoverish the masses. He said the organized labour would not hesitate to cripple the economy which may have negative effect in the long run.

Olajide also said Nigeria is yet to be democratized based on the fact that the constitution governing this country?s democracy was written by the military.

Others present at the meeting were Dr Lakin Akintola, Director of Muslim Concern, Senator Sulaimon Salami, Chairman, Action Alliance Party and Rev. Moses Ilo.

Kiwis, Michalak key in Currie Cup final

A week after New Zealand beat France in the Rugby World Cup final, two kiwis and a Frenchman go to battle in the Currie Cup.

|||

Just a week after New Zealand pipped France in the Rugby World Cup final the countries are set to play key roles in the South African Currie Cup final at Ellis Park Saturday.

Hosts Golden Lions and defending champions and favourites Sharks are coached by Kiwis John Mitchell and John Plumtree respectively and ex-France Test half-back Frederic Michalak is a potential match-winner for the visitors.

Mitchell and Plumtree were born a year apart in the North Island town of Hawera and worked together for the All Blacks ahead of the 2003 World Cup with the former head coach and the latter a video analyst.

But while Mitchell now controls a star-less team with only one 2011 World Cup Springbok in the starting line-up, Plumtree has selected seven including the front row of brothers Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis and Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira.

League results between the teams offer little insight into what may happen before a sell-out 62,000 crowd as the Lions won 28-19 against a Springbok-less Sharks side and rested half their team when losing 53-9 in Durban two weeks ago.

While Mitchell stresses teamwork above all else and reluctantly praises individuals, there is no doubt that the fly-halves battle between Michalak and rising star Elton Jantjies is set to play a critical role.

Michalak tops the Currie Cup points scoring charts with 181 – 17 more than second-place Jantjies – and both have been central figures in the progress of their teams to the climax of the domestic season.

The Frenchman had a rare off-day in the come-from-behind 20-13 semi-final victory over Free State Cheetahs last weekend, missing two relatively simple penalty attempts before retiring during the first half with a thigh injury.

Plumtree has collected four Currie Cup winners' medals with the Sharks, two as a player and two as a coach, and recognises the value Michalak brings to his star-studded squad.

“Frederic has been great this season ... he has been a match-winner week after week. He was not at his best in one or two games but at times he did not play behind the strongest pack the Sharks have ever put out.

“If we can provide a good platform for him in the final then he has the range of skills that are needed and he has been around for a while so that experience will certainly help,” said the 46-year-old Sharks handler.

Jantjies succeeded with all seven kicks at goal in the 29-20 semi-final win over 2010 runners-up Western Province but, true to form, Mitchell did not react by performing any cartwheels.

“Elton was good ... he has been very good all season. He is an exceptional young man and, like the rest of the players, has learnt a lot this year. They have grown and matured,” said the Lions coach.

For Michalak or Jantjies to excel at the ground where the Springboks won the 1995 World Cup, they need possession and while the Sharks may have an edge come scrum time, the Lions should hold their own in the line-outs.

Then there is the crucial breakdown struggle and little known Lions Derick Minnie, Michael Rhodes and skipper Joshua Strauss, sporting the bushiest black beard in South African sport, have been season-long 'bravehearts'.

Opposing them will be Sharks captain Keegan Daniel, 2011 World Cup loose forward Willem Alberts and former national team eighthman Ryan Kankowski in a showdown for loose ball certain to have a major influence on the result. – Sapa-AFP
