At least five people drowned when two boats capsized on Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a local official said Thursday.

Two motorised make-shift boats, which were bound to one another, were carrying about 50 passengers including several amateur footballers.

They “capsized on the lake, causing the death of five people, including some of the footballers,” said Desire Lwanocha, head of the Mutambala district in the Fizi territory of the Sud-Kivu province.

Four other people are still missing, he said, adding that overcrowding was likely to blame for the accident.

It is the fourth boating accident in the Democratic Republic of Congo in less than a month, with about 30 people killed and 100

missing since the end of April. -
