The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed near the symbolic 12,000-point mark on Monday, rising to its highest level in more than two years as US stocks began the week on a positive note.

The blue-chip Dow climbed 108.68 points, or 0.92 per cent, to 11,980.52. The gain was led by Alcoa and other commodity producers that have recently seen a spike in the price of their goods.

The broader Standard and Poor's 500 Index rose 7.49 points, or 0.58 per cent, to 1,290.84, after coming out flat last week.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index, which lost significant ground last week, jumped on Monday by 28.01 points, or 1.04 per cent, to close at 2,717.55. Intel led the gains after the chip maker said it would buy back 10 billion dollars in stock.

The US currency edged lower against the euro to 73.32 euro cents, its lowest level in two months, from 73.42 euro cents on Friday. The dollar also dropped against the Japanese currency to 82.49 yen from 82.59 yen. - Sapa-dpa
