The SA Democratic Teachers Union demanded on Tuesday that the basic education department urgently reinstate temporary teachers who were fired, an official said.

“All temporary educators whose services have been terminated (some of them verbally and others silently) must be reinstated as a matter of extreme urgency,” said Sadtu provincial secretary Fezeka Loliwe in a statement.

The union's pronouncement follow reports that the province's basic education department terminated more than 4219 temporary teachers' contracts due to a financial crisis.

The department was expected to overspend its budget by R800

million.

It has also suspended its pupil transport and nutrition programmes due to financial constraints.

“A teacher at Gobindlovu J.S.S. in Libode received an appointment letter in January 2010, with the last sentence saying:

“your service is required until the post is advertised',” Loliwe said.

That teacher was also not paid a salary in January.

“As Sadtu we cannot fold our arms when the education of the children from the poor and working class communities is being sabotaged by those who take home a huge chunk from the tax payers' coffers.”

The crisis in the province has caught the attention of basic education minister Angie Motshekga who will be on a two-day fact-finding mission from Wednesday.

Motshekga and her deputy minister Enver Surty will meet the premier of the Eastern Cape, the province's director general, Makupula and his top management, to assess the extent of the problems.

They will also look at how the ministry could support the province.

Motshekga will brief all education MECs at the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) and make public her findings public on Friday. - Sapa
