Amnesty will give old tools a new home

STAFF at a garden centre are appealing for any unwanted or broken gardening tools.

Bridgemere Nursery and Garden World, near Nantwich, is asking gardeners to assist with its Garden Tool Amnesty, which runs from Saturday, February 12 to February 27.

The appeal is in aid of The Conservation Foundation's Tools Shed programme, which gives free garden tools, repaired in a number of UK prisons, to schools and community gardens.

Manager Marc Haigh said: "It's the fourth year we have run an appeal like this.

"The initiative applies to tools such as trowels, spades, hand and garden forks, hoes, good old-fashioned garden rakes and lawn rakes, but not tools which are powered by electricity or are petrol-driven."

The Conservation Foundation's director David Shreeve said: "We're delighted that we've been able to link up with Bridgemere Nursery and Garden World for the fourth year running.

"Thanks to the help of the garden centre, our prison partners have received plenty of tools to repair and these in turn have found good homes in school and community gardens. With such a great supply of tools, the Foundation is now busy fund-raising to enable us to work with more prisons around the country."

Anyone who brings in their old gardening tools during the amnesty will receive a 20 per cent off voucher to redeem against selected products.
