Undercover cop used modified watch to record eco meetings

AN undercover policeman has claimed he used a specially modified watch to record meetings of climate change activists planning a raid on Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station.

Undercover Metropolitan Police constable Mark Kennedy recorded a meeting at Iona School in Sneinton in 2009 using a specially modified Casio G Shock watch worth 7,000 equipped with a microchip.

Notts Police raided Iona School on April 13, 2009, and arrested 114 people, including Mr Kennedy, who spent eight years undercover as eco activist Mark Stone.

There were 26 people charged.

The trial of six activists collapsed at Nottingham Crown Court earlier this month amid claims Mr Kennedy had offered to give evidence on their behalf.

But it has since been reported that the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case after recordings of meetings emerged which had not previously been disclosed by Notts Police.

Kennedy told the Mail on Sunday that the meetings at Iona School were recorded on the chip in his watch and then the information was downloaded to a police computer.

He then helped to transcribe the tapes, which were to be used as evidence against the protestors.

A court case concerning the raid was thrown out because taped evidence that would have cleared six activists due to stand trial was allegedly withheld by police.

Kennedy said: "I don't know where those transcripts ended up. I did my bit. I sat in on the meeting and recorded it."

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the disclosure of evidence by the police, at the force's request. The force is also conducting its own investigation.
