Future looking cloudy for two historic Nottingham pubs

THE future of two historic Nottingham pubs is under threat.

The parent company of Ye Olde Salutation Inn and the Royal Children has gone into liquidation.

Chimpeasy Limited, owner of the two pubs, went into voluntary liquidation on December 22.

The company's shareholders will have the final say on whether to keep the pubs running.

The Salutation is one of three Nottingham pubs that claim to be the oldest in the city.

It is believed that the inn, in Hounds Gate, was built on the site of an old alehouse in 1240 and served as a workshop and home for a tanner.

Caves beneath the building are said to date from the 9th century. Historians say they were part of a Saxon farm.

Steve Westby, chairman of Nottingham Camra, said: "It would be sad to see it go because the Salutation has got such a strong history.

"It says 1240 on the side of the building and you can trace its history back to those times.

"The Salutation is a wonderful old pub and we would be devastated if it closed.

"It would be a travesty."

The neighbouring Royal Children is named after the children of Princess Anne, who stayed in the city after fleeing London during rebellions against her father, King James II, who subsequently abdicated in 1688.

The Post was unable to contact Chimpeasy Limited and nobody at either pub was available to comment.
