Record number of breath tests in festive blitz

A RECORD number of breath tests were carried out during Notts Police's biggest-ever campaign to stop motorists drink-driving over Christmas and New Year.

A total of 3,501 tests were carried out between December 1 and January 1, and 145 people were arrested after they were found to be either over the legal limit or failed to provide a sample.

During the previous year's campaign 691 less tests were carried out, but 191 arrests were made during the equivalent period.

Chief Inspector Andy Charlton, Nottinghamshire's head of roads policing, said: "As always a small minority just don't listen to our advice and the New Year for them will feature lengthy driving bans, fines and possibly imprisonment.

"They will all also face the difficult prospect of trying to get insurance cover when their ban is over.

"The fact that we tested more people in 2010 but actually arrested fewer doesn't necessarily indicate that drink-driving is less of a problem or that there are fewer drink-drivers out there.

"We would need to see many years of consistent reductions to tell us the problem is really reducing."

Chief Inspector Charlton added: "The message from Nottinghamshire Police to any potential drink-driver is that 2011 will see us continue to work to find and arrest you before you put pedestrians, other road users and yourself at risk with your selfish behaviour."

Anyone who suspects drink driving should contact police in an emergency on 999 or call the police's non-emergency number 0300 300 99 99. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
