Sport taster day draws 100 girls

NOTTINGHAM Wildcats basketball club held its inaugural Girls in Sport day to encourage youngsters to get involved in leisure, writes Lee Hammond.

More than 100 girls turned up to receive basketball coaching from Nottingham Trent University players and some of the Wildcats stars.

The girls stayed to watch Wildcats beat Sevenoaks Suns 69-51 in the women's basketball Division One.

Chris Prior, last season's coach, organised the day after seeing a college in the States, where his daughter was playing basketball, host a number of sessions.

He said: "We are hoping to make this particular Girls in Sport day an annual event and we are trying to do more community events."

The event was held at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena, in Greenwood Road, Bakersfield.

Hannah Shaw, 20, of the Wildcats centre, said: "You don't have to be the best basketball player or football player, you can just turn up, and as long as everyone is happy, getting fit and enjoying it, then that's good."

The Wildcats, second in the league, play their final home game of the season on March 26 against top-of-the-table Sheffield Hatters. Visit www.nottinghambasketball.co.uk for more information.
