Soldier's emotional farewell

A SOLDIER who is heading to Afghanistan was given a big send off by dozens of family and friends.

Lance Corporal Daniel Wright is due to start his six month tour of duty with 3rd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Staffords).

The 22-year-old's wife Terrie organised a leaving party in Tommy Cheadle's pub at Port Vale last night.

Terrie, aged 19, who is originally from Basford, said: "He has done three months in Iraq before when he finished his training, but this is his first time in Afghanistan and it will be completely different.

"I am anxious about it but I have a lot of confidence in him. He's good at his job and he knows what he is doing.

"He's excited and nervous, like being a groom on his wedding day again.

"We had to organise a party, because both of us have big families and we couldn't get anywhere big enough to all have a meal."

Daniel is in the fire support group attached to C-company. He commands Jackals, armoured vehicles designed to protect against roadside explosions.

He joined the Army when he was just 17 after dropping out of college because he found it too boring.

He first met Terrie over the internet and they married after 10 months of dating.

They live at the regiment's base in Fallingbostel, Germany, and Terrie works in child care.

Daniel, originally from Pittshill, said: "Having all my family supporting me is a really big boost. I'm looking forward to going out to Afghanistan but I'm scared too."

His mum, Carol Middleton, aged 43, from Chell, said: "I'm so proud of him, at his passing out ceremony he told me not to worry, because this is what he wants to do."
