Crackdown on M6 crime leads to five arrests

FIVE arrests have been made following an operation to crackdown on offenders using the region's road networks to commit crimes.

A joint initiative targeted drivers around Junction 16 of the M6 and used two vehicle checking points and Sandbach Services and Keele Services.

The operation on Thursday involved more than 75 officers from Cheshire Police, North West Motorway Policing Group, Central Motorway Policing Group, HM Revenue and Customs and UK Border Agency.

As a result two people were arrested in Cheshire and three in Staffordshire on suspicion of offences including money laundering, criminal damage, harassment and immigration offences.

A number of fixed penalty notices for vehicle defects and motoring offences were issued, and six vehicles that did not comply with legal requirements were towed away.

More than 11,000 found in a vehicle was seized pending further investigation into suspected money laundering offences.

The main focus of the operation was to intercept those who use the roads to carry out crimes such as burglary and car crime, and to detect and deter motorists driving unlawfully.

Inspector Liz Cunningham from Cheshire Police, said: "We always proactively use our resources and technology to arrest criminals and deal with offenders appropriately, but during Operation Lockdown, the public are far more likely to notice our activity.

"We have had a successful day and are achieving our aim to make our road networks and communities safer."
