Plea to make overgrown footpath safer for residents

RESIDENTS are calling for Notts County Council to improve a footpath in Arnold which has been described as unusable and unsafe at night.

The path runs from Mansfield Road through to Lodge Farm Lane but is so overgrown that people have been using the car park of the Waggon & Horses pub in Mansfield Road to cut through instead.

However, Gedling Borough Council has now granted planning permission for three houses to be built behind the pub, leaving no option but to use the path.

Jenni Rice, 22, of Arnold, said she would have to use the public footpath at least three times a week.

She said: "The pathway is muddy and uneven and the trees are overgrown. It's just not usable.

"I've lived in Arnold for 20 years, and I've never seen anyone use it.

"Nothing has been done to it for ten years."

Miss Rice works in a pub, which means she sometimes has to walk home at 1am.

"I'd be scared to use the footpath at that time of the night," she said, "because you don't know who's up there.

"There's no light. I wouldn't be able to see anything and I'd be scared to fall as well."

Labour councillor at Gedling Borough Council Peter Barnes said the pathway had to be tidied up and lit properly.

"It's not been looked after for years," he said. I think the county council needs to sort it out. It's not safe at night."

Stephen Jones, countryside access manager for Notts County Council, said that most rights of way were unsurfaced and unlit.

He added: "We have now arranged for vegetation along the path to be cut back and the path will be monitored in the future."

Planning permission to build the houses was granted by Gedling Borough Council in August 2010. But applicant Neil Dexter has re-submitted the application to include solar panels on the roof and a decision has yet to be made.
