Nottingham primary school recognised for work to raise awareness about drugs

A NOTTINGHAM primary school has been recognised for its work to raise drug awareness among its pupils.

Glapton Primary in Clifton has become the latest to receive the DrugAware award from Nottingham City Council.

The award is part of the city's Early Intervention Programme, part of which involves schools tackling substance and alcohol misuse.

To become an approved DrugAware school, Glapton Primary outlined an action plan which included staff training to provide them with the skills needed to identify pupils who may be at risk.

The school has also linked in with DrugAware community development workers to provide short sessions to parents, carers and the local community with the aim of improving knowledge around substance misuse so they become more confident to talk to young people about the issues.

They have also learned about activities taking place in school and what support services are available.

Head teacher Ruth Ellis said: "We will continue to complete the targets set out in our action plan and will work closely with parents to extend the learning beyond the classroom and into the local community."

Thirty-nine city schools have now signed up to the award.

Councillor David Mellen, portfolio holder for children's services at the city council, said: "This is a fantastic achievement and highlights our commitment to raising aspirations among our children and young people."
