Food expert harps on benefits of cocoa, soyabeans, others

THAT Nigerians may have improved health through functional foods, an expert in food-science and technology, Mr. Duro Kuteyi, has reiterated the health benefits of eating natural cocoa, soyabeans and yellow corn related foods.

He said that the four main nutrient components of cocoa: theobromine, flavonol antioxidants, magnesium and cocoa butter, among other numerous minor nutrients explain why cocoa can help to prevent or treat several health problems and improve general well being.

Kuteyi, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Spectra Industries Limited, added that soyabeans contains carbohydrate, fat, protein, vitamins, mineral like calcium, folic acid and Iron. ?The protein in soyabean has all the essential amino acids that are adequate for human health,? he said.

Speaking with reporters in Lagos, Kuteyi hinted that these rich farm produce are found in their rich and unadulterated quantities in Spectra products like Spectra Cocoa Powder; Suco cocoa powder drink; Hyfiba and Fast-o-meal.
?They are produced to offer beneficial opportunities related to the well-being and health of our customers and also reduce the risk of diseases, while adding value to all our customers.?

He explained that cocoa powder and chocolate are rich sources of high quality polyphenol antioxidants, similar to those found in fruits, vegetables and red wine.
?Cocoa polyphenols were previously thought to only play a role in flavour and aroma development in chocolate, but more recently have been studied for their antioxidant potentials and possible health benefits to humans.

?Antioxidants promote Nitric Oxide production in the bodies that helps Flow Mediated Dilation (FMD), overcome erectile dysfunction and sexual weakness, reduce blood pressure, promote recuperation from stroke and heart diseases.?

Kuteyi added that the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) approved Hyfiba and Fast-o-meal are pre-cooked brands made of maize, soyabeans, vitamins and minerals. ?Fast-o-meal has soyabean and soya has high lecithin content and is therefore excellent for mental activity and for protection against cholesterol  deposits. They are excellent food for the diabetics and growing children.?

?It has been claimed that lecithin lowers blood cholesterol through emulsification of fats and against all the complications of the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes that follow,? he said.
