Armed police called to street disturbance

POLICE arrested a teenager and confiscated a gun after a late night party turned sour.

Armed police were called to Dividy Road in Bentilee at 10.30pm on Wednesday night after reports of a firearm being brandished outside a row of houses.

It is believed an argument had erupted between neighbours over noise levels at a party.

A man suffered facial injuries following an altercation and required medical treatment.

Police have confirmed a 16-year-old from the city was arrested following the incident.

Officers, who recovered an unused firearm, were forced to close Dividy Road near to its junction with Bucknall Road for a short period of time while the incident was dealt with.

Inspector Matthew Bennion, local policing commander for the area, said: "A detailed investigation into this incident is now underway.

"Staffordshire Police takes reports of incidents involving weapons very seriously. Our absolute priority is to ensure the safety of the public and our officers.

"As a result of the information we received both armed and unarmed officers were deployed to the scene."

"High visibility patrols have also been stepped up in the area to reassure members of the local community."

Families living in the area have been left stunned by the incident.

"There must have been about 10 police cars in the road when it was all happening," revealed one resident, who asked to remain anonymous.

"I think it happened after someone went around to complain about the noise from a party.

"When the police arrived there was lots of people out in the street.

"The whole thing seemed to go on for quite some time and there was an ambulance at one point."

Another resident said: "When I was heading home I did notice a lot of people all in the street, but it was mostly kids."

Other homeowners said the area didn't usually witness much trouble and most of the noise came from revellers walking home from a night out.

One resident who lives in Dividy Road said: "We do hear police sirens quite often, but they are heading elsewhere and not coming here.

"We do hear people at night and sometimes there is a bit of trouble but that usually involves people who have been drinking or are on their way back from a night on the town.

"I'm quite surprised to hear what has happened."

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact detectives on 0300 123 44 55 quoting incident number 798 of February 16. Alternatively witnesses can call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
