Babbington Rescue needs 40,000 to build a new kennel block for stray and unwanted dogs

AN ANIMAL rescue centre is trying to raise 40,000 to build a new kennel block.

Babbington Rescue, which looks after and re-homes stray and abandoned dogs, says the work will cost 90,000.

The centre, in Awsworth, near Kimberley, is privately owned and only has 50,000 to spend on the work.

Owner Tony Sanderson said the new building was essential.

"The existing block was built in the 1950s and is not in a very good condition," he said.

"It is the main block for the site and if it is replaced it will improve living conditions for the dogs and we will be able to take on more."

The kennel block houses 31 dogs, but the proposed replacement will have room for 38.

Mr Sanderson said the extra space was needed.

"Since November, we have seen a 20 per cent increase in the amount of dogs we have had coming in.

"I think it's because a lot of people are losing their homes and moving into rented accommodation where they can't take animals.

"The new block would enable us to take in more dogs and give them more space to run around."

If planning permission for the kennels is granted, work will begin in November and will hopefully be completed by March 2012.

At the moment, prospective owners have to walk around the outside of the kennel block to view the dogs. Mr Sanderson wants to move the walkways inside the kennels, which he said will reduce noise from dogs barking.

"We also want to install a new heating system as we only have a fan heater to keep the dogs warm in the winter," he said.

"We will also create an area in the kennels where dogs can be groomed.

"They will get to look better and feel better."

Babbington Rescue is the only privately-owned dog rescue centre in the UK.

It was established in 1993 and normally has between 50 and 60 dogs which need to find a new home.

It works with Nottingham City Council and Amber Valley, Erewash and Broxtowe Borough Councils to hold and re-home stray and unwanted dogs.

"We've seen a dramatic increase in the amount of dogs brought to us," said Mr Sanderson.

"Three years ago, we would only have had about 25 dogs here.

"We've built caf and shop facilities to try to encourage people to spend here, but we still need money.

"One way or another we will build this kennel block. It needs to be done."
