Woman left scarred for life after being hit by a crutch

A MAN who had been attacked struck a woman with a crutch leaving her scarred for life.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard Geraldine Podmore and her partner Shaun Smith visited a friend at an address in Sneyd Green on October 9. But they left soon after Stephen Simpson arrived. Prosecutor Neil Ahuja said Mr Smith came back and punched the defendant a number of times.

The assault was unprovoked. Simpson's car window was then smashed so he took a crutch from the rear of the car and smashed a window of Mr Smith's car.

The court heard Simpson was waving the crutch and it struck Geraldine Podmore. She needed four stitches to close a wound on her forehead.

Simpson, aged 43, of Birches Head Road, Birches Head, pleaded guilty to damaging a Renault Clio car and assaulting Geraldine Podmore occasioning her actual bodily harm on the basis that he did not intend to strike her but accepted waving the crutch was reckless.

Simpson was sentenced to 10 months in jail, suspended for two years, with 300 hours' unpaid work.

He must also pay Geraldine Podmore 1,000 compensation.
