Several birds lost from city farm after aviary lock smashed

A CITY farm in St Ann's has lost several birds after the lock to its new outside aviary was smashed.

Stephen Gee, education officer at Stonebridge City Farm, said someone had tipped over plants, water-butts and deliberately smashed the lock last night.

He said three to four cockatiels, three to four budgerigars and a couple of rosellas - a type parrot - had escaped.

"This is sad and unfortunate. It's one less attraction or amenity for the public to enjoy," Mr Gee said.

"The birds could be anywhere. We are hoping they will get hungry and recognise where their source of food is.

"We like to think we keep our animals safe and secure overnight. But if somebody comes and smashes the lock we can't do anything about it.

"This is unusual, but these things happen occasionally on school holidays."

He said the aviary was less than six months old and had been paid for by the Richard Goodfellow Memorial Fund, which was set up in memory of the volunteer who died of a brain tumour in 2005.
