New market for West Bridgford is making a big splash

A NEW market set up to attract trade from West Bridgford's Central Avenue is going from strength to strength, say organisers.

The Melton Road market has been running for the past three months and has now just launched its new website – www.meltonrdshops.co.uk.

The market was set up by a group of shopkeepers on Melton Road to provide an alternative to customers who would otherwise go to Central Avenue.

Fruit and vegetable seller Tony Burton said: "It was originally started to get more people down this end of Bridgford.

"It's proved pretty successful, even in the bad weather people have come down, we just need to keep it going and spread the word."

The market is currently operating on the first Saturday of every month, and more than ten shops are involved.

The next market on Melton Road will take place on May 7 and the organisers have drafted in Julian the Juggler to entertain the children. There will also be stall selling jewellery and arts and crafts, as well as produce from the several stores involved.

Chief organiser of the market Karina Wells said: "There will be sausage tasting, cheese tasting, seafood tasting, local honey, cupcake decorating and home-made chutneys.

"Meet the shopkeepers, check out what they have on offer and experience the fabulous quality and atmosphere for yourselves."

Mrs Wells, creator of the event's website, said the market was all about supporting the local economy.

She said: "Significantly more money re-circulates in our towns when consumers choose to support our locally-owned businesses.

"Unlike their national competition, locally-owned businesses regularly purchase from other local retailers, manufacturers, service providers and farms.

"Supporting our locally-owned businesses is critical in growing a strong economy and tax base, benefiting everyone who lives here."
