Ajax Cape Town coasted to a 3-1 win over Golden Arrows at the Newlands Stadium on Friday night in a game in which they always had control.

Ajax enjoyed most of the early play although, for the most part, they found the visiting defence in solid form.

The KZN side appeared content to sit back and let Ajax do the attacking and they were punished midway through the stanza.

Having failed to create clear-cut chances from open play, the Cape side went ahead from a set piece when Thulani Hlatshwayo netted with a well-placed header from a 21st minute corner.

Following the goal, Ajax remained on the attack, but the only time they came close was when Terror Fanteni had a goal ruled out for off-sides.

Abafana Bes'thende ended the half with a flurry as Norikazu Murakami's free kick was athletically tipped over the bar by Andre Petim and then Collins Mbesuma gave the home side a scare with a glanced header which just missed the far post.

Thulani Serero added to his ever-growing reputation with a superb individual goal in the 53rd minute. Showing nimbleness in the box, he left a clutch of Arrows' defenders in his wake before hammering home a shot from 12-yards.

Ten minutes later, the hosts added a third - Fanteni squared from the right and George Maluleka stepped over the ball, allowing Serero to get a shot in on goal. His effort was blocked by keeper Siphamandla Ntombela, which enabled Maluleka to pounce from close range.

Foppe de Haan's side appeared to go into cruise control after the third goal, dominating play and looking for a fourth when they upped the ante.

However, it was at the other end that a goal arrived with Mbesuma netting an 83rd minute penalty. He was given two opportunities to score after Petim was adjudged to have moved too early when he saved the first spot kick.

It proved to be merely a consolation though as Ajax held on for a deserved three points from a game in which they were just too good. -
