'We were told to go to a shelter'

Barbara Whitby was also left homeless when her two-storey maisonette flooded after a pipe in the property above hers burst.

The water soaked her walls, electrics and left her without heating.

The mum-of-three, from The Meadows, said she was told by Nottingham City Homes to declare herself and her children homeless because they could not offer them temporary accommodation.

Although, she had a friend that she somewhere to go she said others might not be so lucky.

"Everything was soaked in the house so I asked Nottingham City Homes to provide my and my three children with temporary accommodation while the house dried out," she said.

"They told me that they wouldn't rehouse us and said we had to declare ourselves homeless and go to a shelter.

"We were fortunate that we had somewhere to stay."

Although the house is now dried out Ms Whitby said her furniture, carpets and curtains have all been ruined and will all need replacing.
