Every year, since 1974, NRK (The National Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) is granted the responsibility�for organizing a national donation effort. The money collected on a nationwide basis is dedicated to national and international charitable purposes.
The NRK Telethon is the world's largest voluntary community initiative and this year the funds raised goes to Norwegian People's Aid's work to clear mines, cluster munitions and other remnants of war and conflict.
At last count (Monday morning) this year's drive had resulted in a total of nearly�NOK 208 million, the second most successful NRK Telethon so far.
Thousands of of people are involved on a voluntary basis as collectors. The NRK arranges auctions, where the public can make bids, - and the money goes to the selected purpose. Almost anything is auctioned away, - you can bid on a TV appearance, famous peoples clothing, products donated by companies etc.
Since 1992, Norwegian People`s Aid (NPA) has become one of the lead NGOs in the field� of humanitarian mine action, undertaking programs to battle mines and ERW (explosive remnants of war) in a total of 25 countries worldwide.� Active today in 18 affected countries, NPA is one of the major global NGO contributors to reduction of the world wide problems created by landmines and ERW, spending more than USD 30 million annually on this activity alone. 
The NRK Telethon ursually takes place in October when the taxbill arrives. This year The Prime� Minister Jens Stoltenberg has on behalf of the Government pledged 35 million NOK, in addition to what is donated by the Norwegian polulation
In 1979, 252 million was donated to Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), and since 1974 a total of 3,6 billion NOK has been donated to various national and international organizations.
