South Africa congratulated Zambia's new president Michael Sata, who was sworn in on Friday.

The South African government and its citizens would continue working with Zambia for the mutual benefit of the two countries, the international relations department said.

It lauded all who played a role in ensuring the election was declared free, fair and transparent by AU and SA Development Community observers.

“This bodes well for the consolidation of democratic culture on the continent and in Zambia particularly.”

The department said Defence and Military Veterans Minister Lindiwe Sisulu would represent South Africa at Sata's inauguration ceremony.

Incumbent President Rupiah Banda conceded defeat to the opposition leader after Wednesday's election.

Banda's Movement for Multiparty Democracy had been in power for 20 years, according to Associated Press.

Sata, who headed the Patriotic Front Party, had been a member of Banda's party until a leadership dispute in 2001.

News agencies also reported some election-related violence and at least two people dead, before the results were declared by Zambia's Chief Justice Ernest Sakala. – Sapa
