Johannesburg - The way had been cleared for an African Union (AU) road map to be implemented in Libya, South African President Jacob Zuma said on Sunday upon his return from a United Nations meeting in New York.

“The NTC (National Transitional Council) wrote to the AU declaring its support for AU processes, and in particular the need to establish an inclusive transitional government, which would be able to take the Libyan seat in the AU,” Zuma said in a statement.

Zuma had attended a meeting on Libya convened by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon.

“We believe the ground has been cleared for the AU and all of us to support the Libyan people to go forward and implement the processes mentioned in the AU road map, and generally to gradually bring about normalcy in that country. We stand ready to assist in whatever way we can, as part of the AU,” Zuma said.

The NTC has been governing Libya since strongman Muammar Gaddafi was ousted.

During his statement to the UN's general debate of the 66th Session, Zuma said there was a need for Palestine to be granted its wish to become a member of the world body. - Sapa
