US stocks mixed

US stocks were mixed as markets opened Friday after General Electric and McDonald's reported second-quarter profits beating expectations, while industrial giant Caterpillar fell short.

US stocks were mixed as markets opened Friday after General Electric and McDonald's reported second-quarter profits beating expectations, while industrial giant Caterpillar fell short.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 30.42 points (0.24 percent) to 12,693.99 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

The broader S&P 500 dropped 1.88 points (0.14 percent) to 1,341.92, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 6.80 points (0.24 percent) to stand at 2,841.23.

In a series of closely watched earnings reports, GE said its second-quarter profit rose 21 percent from a year ago to $3.76

billion, beating analyst's forecasts, while McDonald's profit rose 15 percent to $1.41 billion.

Caterpillar said second-quarter profits surged 44 percent from a year ago to $1.01 billion, but the results fell short of analysts' expectations and the company's shares dropped 7.6 percent, dragging down the Dow average. - Sapa-AFP
