Guinea has opened a preliminary investigation into an assassination attempt on President Alpha Conde, the state prosecutor said on Friday.

Around 40 army officers were arrested following the rocket attack on Conde's Conakry home on Tuesday which left the president unhurt but a member of his presidential guard dead and two others injured.

The assault came just seven months after Guinea held its first democratic elections.

According to prosecutor William Fernandez, those arrested are accused of “criminal conspiracy, attempt against state security, assassination of a member of the presidential guard, 'attempted assassination' of the president, 'holding illegal arms and ammunition, carrying and consuming drugs, destruction of buildings and complicity”.

He said investigators seized “three 4X4 vehicles, a large quantity of ammunition, machine guns, rocket-launchers, military fatigues and bullet-proof vests, a large quantity of drugs and talismans.”

He said that the accused will have full rights in custody and that the matter will be “independently handled” by judicial authorities “in respect of the law”.

Most of those arrested are allies of General Sekouba Konate, who led a transition government in 2010, and of Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, who brought the military junta to power at the end of 2008 and subsequently led the country for a year.

They also include General Nouhou Thian, chief of Guinea's armed forces under Konate, who was later sidelined by Conde.

President Conde told French radio in an interview after the attack that rogue army officers displeased with anti-corruption measures may have been behind the assault.

Conde has been tasked with unpopular reforms of the security sector which has been at the vanguard of countless coups since independence from France in 1958. - AFP
