Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town grabbed derby honours with a 1-0 win over Santos in a tightly contested Absa Premiership match at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

The first half lacked in quality, and did not produce too many clear-cut chances, although there were plenty of meaty challenges.

Ajax started brightly, and converted their first real opportunity when Khama Billiat was played in by Terror Fanteni.

Billiat did well to leave Pere Ariweriyai in his wake before unleashing a powerful drive to give Ajax a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.

The game remained tight, however, with Ajax enjoying the slight upper hand in the first half.

Santos' best chance came in the 23rd minute when Erwin Isaacs teed up a header for Jurie Basie, but Sean Roberts was up to the task with an excellent save.

Ajax had the first opportunity of the second half, but somehow the Santos defence managed to keep out both Lebo Manyama and then Terror Fanteni's efforts, thanks to Wayne Arendse on the line.

The Peoples' Team started to fight back, and worked their way into the game again, with a good chance falling to Isaacs who sent a close range effort wide.

Vuyisile Wana and Eleazar Rodgers both had shots saved by Roberts as Boebie Solomons' side continued to apply pressure.

Santos continued to attack, and would have felt that their second-half performance deserved a goal, but Ajax kept them at bay with some determined defending to earn their first victory of the season. - Sapa
