Butch James has been handed a four-week ban just five games into his return to southern hemisphere rugby with South Africa's Lions.

Southern hemisphere rugby body Sanzar said on Thursday the Springboks and Lions player was suspended up to and including July 17 after he was found guilty of dangerous play for a high tackle on Sharks flanker Keegan Daniel in Saturday's Super 15 clash.

Flyhalf James kicked 15 points against former team the Sharks in the 30-30 draw in Johannesburg, but was shown a yellow card in the second half for the high shot on Daniel.

Sanzar, which had reserved judgment on Wednesday to consider their decision, said the suspension would begin on June 20 because of the Lions' bye in this weekend's final round of the Super 15 regular season. – Sapa-AP
